  • Moumbagna continued to enhance his reputation in the eyes of OM diehards as he scored a contender for goal of the season against Toulouse
  • Indomitable Lions of Cameroon head coach Marc Brys was in the stands and watched Moumbagna and Onana get to the score sheet
  • Marseille’s late equalizer help prevent a fourth defeat in a row for the Marseillais

Cameroonian duo Jean Emile Onana and Faris Moumbagna scored on Sunday evening at the Toulouse stadium to help Olympique Marseille (OM) win a point on the road and end a run of three defeats in a row.

The nerves of the midweek Europa League commitments against Benfica didn’t help Olympique Marseille in the contest but they finished the match day 30 fixture with satisfaction.

Onana put Marseille ahead after 38th minute, rewarding the visitors for their efforts in the opening moments and silencing the home fans.

The multiple Ligue 1 champions were pegged back in first-half stoppage time courtesy of a goal from Rasmus Nicolaisen who made matters even at the pause.

Toulouse returned with greater momentum and creativity, constantly pushing Louis-Gasset’s OM while seeking to lead for the first time on the night.

Ivorian midfielder Yann Gboho scored a goal for Les Violets in the 82nd minute to erupt celebrations amongst Toulouse fans and set the stage for a nail-biting finale.

Unfortunately for Toulouse their dreams of winning at home were squashed late on by another Cameroonian.

Moumbagna, who had come on in the 59th minute, scored on a bicycle kick in second-half stoppage time to level the scoring at 2-2 and ensure both sides get something for their efforts on the night as it finished 2-2.

The draw isn’t the ideal result for Marseille as with it they trail fifth-place OGC Nice by seven points, which complicates their chances of being in European competition next season.

Onana and co have five Ligue 1 games remaining, and they’ll be in action Wednesday against Nice at the Stade Vélodrome. A win over Les Aiglons will allow Marseille to close the gap in what’s a thrilling race for these European competition spots.

For Carles Martínez Novell’s Toulouse, there are four league matches left in their season and they trail Lyon by four points as they seek to finish in the top half of the table. Toulouse will travel next Sunday on the road to face FC Lorient.

Onana counts one goal in nine matchs for OM while Faris has scored thrice and made one assist in the same number of French Ligue 1 matches as his compatriot.
