Russia have extended their unbeaten run against Cameroon to four games following a 1-0 win in an international friendly played at a frantic pace this Thursday, October 11 at the Dinamo Lev Yashin Stadium thanks to a first-half header from Fyodor Chalov.

The build-up to the game had been dominated by news of the absence of Eric Maxim Choupo Moting and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa owing to injuries that prevented them from reporting to camp, but Cameroon’s first-half performance suggested they could certainly do with the dynamism and ruthlessness of the duo.

Fyodor Chalov headed home a rebound from Fabrice Joseph Ondoa’s save to break the deadlock after his initial effort was pushed away by the keeper making his return in goal for Cameroon.

The game got off to a frantic in the opening ten minutes with the visitors could have been two up in the opening quarter hour if Vincent Aboubakar and Bryan Mbeumo were a little more clinical.

Fabrice Ondoa produced the first save of the game just 18 minutes after kick-off before the Russians hit the upright with a low shot.

Mbeumo played in Vincent Aboubakar to create a one-on-one situation between Russia’s Matvei Safonov denied Cameroon with a fine save.

Aboubakar found space in the Russian defence again but this time around his shot was deflected at the expense of a corner.

The Russian scored the opener against the run of play five minutes from the break through Chalov, who scored his first goal for his country.

The hosts took the advantage to the break but with signs of offering a better spectacle in the second segment.

Russia were more incisive upon resumption. They found the back of Fabrice Ondoa’s net ten minutes into the second segment, but the goal was chalked off due to an offside call.

The Russians hit the crossbar with another close range effort that brushed past Ondoa’s finger tips before finding the post.

Mbeumo also flapped at an opportunity from close range which threatened to be an ominous missed opportunity for a team yearning for an equalizer.

Russia had to ride their luck and rely on the alertness of Matvei Safonov to thwart Mbeumo as he produced stops as the hold held on in the closing stages.

The resoluteness to the home display earned them the victory to extend their unbeaten run against Cameroon to five games.

Song’s Cameroon will return to France to quickly prepare themselves for the next friendly clash against reigning African champions, Senegal on Monday.
