Eding Sport de la Lekie’s forward Peterpaul Nembakia and Arthur Avom who just agreed a move to French Ligue 1 side, FC Lorient, have fetched Cameroon the maiden gold medal at the ongoing Francophonie games in Kinshasa, following a 2-1 win over Burkina Faso in the final of the competition this Sunday, August 6.
Nembakia Peter Paul gave Cameroon the lead at 25th minute of play that saw both sides separate for the break on a 1-0 score line.
The boys of coach Yvan Kenmoe failed to keep the lead as Burkina Faso scored the equalizer 18 minutes into the second segment.
Hope for the stallions was short lived as Arthur Avom Ebong converted a penalty awarded to Cameroon to secure a 2-1 81’ lead, taking Cameroon closer to the gold medal.
The score line remained unchanged at the end of the final blast, earning Cameroon the first place title for the first time in their outings in this competition.
The U20 lions proved determination for the gold medal from day one when they recorded a zero all draw against Lebanon and went on to win Niger 1-0 in their second outing.
However, they once again met Niger during the semi final clash and grabbed a 1-0 win over the latter to qualify for the final.
Burkina Faso’s equalizing goal only turned out to be a consolatory goal as they blundered few minutes to the end of the encounter by bringing down an opponent in their box.
Avom from Colombe of the Dja and Lobo walked to the spot and netted his second goal of the competition, having scored the lone wining goal against Niger in the team’s second game. He was named player of the competition.
This adds to the number of gold medals secured so far in DR Congo for Cameroon’s flag bearers as the country now counts 12 gold medals, 13 silver and 14 bronze.
