The Northwest Regional League of the Cameroon football federation (FECAFOOT) will have a new chairman by May 25 when the elections of the replacement of Mbigha Felix is completed.
A release issued late last month by president Gilbert Schlick announced April 29 as the start date for the whole process expected to be followed to elect a new chairman.
President Mbigha who has been Northwest FECAFOOT president since 2018 lost the position late last year when he was co-opted by president Samuel Eto’o Fils of the national bureau in accordance with his executive committee to replace Njalla Quan Jnr who had resigned from the role before being slammed a ten-year ban by the homologation and discipline commission of his regional championship.
The appointment of Mbigha as a national official condemned him to lose the regional office per the prescriptions of the FECAFOOT text.
First vice president, Jepther Pase who assumed interim since Mbigha left has since exceeded the 90 days maximum for re-organization of elections, thus making the exercise a need.
The Magistrate Schlick led electoral commission has given till May 3 as the deadline for submission of applications while announcing they will make public the draft list of candidates a day after they stop collecting applications.
The draft list and their files will then be scrutinized by the ethics committee for the final list to be published on May 10. A few processes will be observed after that before elections proper for the post of chairman and any other vacant role on May 25.
Noted for its stability and deals during elections, the Northwest FECAFOOT has mostly produced a single and unanimous candidate for the post of the chairman, but being a mid-mandate elections things can be different, which will make it even more exciting.
Everything being equal, winners of elections into the various positions will last maximum 20 months in office as the four-year mandate of the current national executive elected in December finishes in December 2025 and a fresh elections is expected to be organized after that.
The previous regional elections held in August 2021 but it’s unclear if the same month can be used in 2025 or not given it’s a national elections year.
President Mbigha, a retired goalkeeper who played for YOSA of Bamenda is expected to be back in the region pitch for support for a regional or national role during the 2025 regional elections.
