Cameroon’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning goalkeeper, Fabrice Joseph Ondoa Ebogo has received the blessings of his nation on behalf of his team mates ahead of the squad’s get together in Saudi Arabia from December 30th.
The Nimes gloves man received the flag of the nation this Friday December 28 from the Director of cabinet at the presidency of the Republic, Samuel Mvondo Ayolo during a solemn ceremony attended by a battery of dignitaries, including Sports minister professor Narcisse Mouelle Kombi amongst others.
The organizers picked Ondoa for the exercise owing to his status as one of the most experienced players in the absence of Vincent Aboubakar who is busy sorting his club future.
Ondoa, 28, was joined by potential AFCON debutants Faris Moumbagna, Nathan Douala, Leonel Ateba Christian Mbida plus the rest of the staff of the Indomitable Lions.
The former FC Sevilla shot stopper and goalkeeper of the tournament in the running to the 2017 triumph was tasked to give their best to make Cameroonians proud per their performance during the 34th edition of the continental jamboree.
Ondoa and the rest of the Cameroon staff picked for the tournament will leave the country within the next 24 hours. They will travel to Jeddah for ten days camp which will be punctuated by a friendly against fellow AFCON-bound Chipolopolo of Zambia on January 8.
A chunk of the 27-man squad picked by Rigobert Song Bahanag will join their peers in Saudi Arabia for the preparations camp.
The five-time winners will travel to Côte D’Ivoire on January 9 for the finals of only the third edition of the competition expected to have 24 nations.
Ondoa, Njie Clinton Mua, Karl Toko Ekambi and skipper Vincent Aboubakar are the only survivors from Cameroon’s fifth AFCON winning squad in 2017 still in the mix for more.
Rigobert Song, Cameroon’s first coach indigenous coach at the finals since Jean Manga Onguene led his nation at the 1998 event in Burkina Faso is hoping to inspire the Indomitable Lions to a sixth domestic crown at the tournament he won twice and featured in three finals after a record seven tournaments.
Record man Vincent Aboubakar in his fourth AFCON tournament is expected to skipper his nation during his fourth AFCON tournament and maybe replicate the form of the 2022 tournament on home soil.
Cameroon open their competition on 15 January in an exciting Group C clash with Guinea before also meeting the holders, Senegal, and the Gambia in a remake of the quarter-final of the 2021 event.
