President Samuel Eto’o Fils of the Cameroon Football federation (FECAFOOT) has appointed Martin Ntoungou Mpile as the interim head coach of the Indomtable Lions barely hours after he clashed with Marc Brys at the headquarters of the institution in Tsinga.
Eto’o, who had invited 62-year-old Marc Brys for first meeting at the sport’s headquarters sparked with the coach after having a violent exchange with Mr Cyril Tollo who had come to represent the sport’s minister and find out the raison d’etre for the invitation of the coach.
During the heated argument with coach Brys, Eto’o the Belgian he remains the boss and must be respected while the trainer argued he has the final say when it comes to picking players.
The exchanges escalated in a very loud tone until the minister’s adviser Tollo asked the delegation of coaches appointed by the minister to leave the meeting.
Just before departure, Eto’o told Brys if he leaves he will never come again. Fast track, few hours later he suspends the former Al Raed gaffer and replaced him with Martin Ntoungou Mpile who he had made deputy to Brys few weeks earlier.
The conflict between FECAFOOT and the country’s ministry of Sports under the guidance of Professor Narcisse Mouelle has escalated in the past few weeks with each faction investing maximum energy to show its supremacy in the duty of appointment of the national team coach.
Ceasefire calls from persons of goodwill have not been considered by either faction though in the last two weeks Cameroon faces two of the quarter-finalists of the last African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cape Verde Islands and Angola.
Martin Ntoungou Mpile whose last job was with the Intermediate Lions with whom he finished fourth during the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN) previously served as deputy manager of the Indomtable Lions as far back as the days Eto’o was a player and skipper for Cameroon. He will be assisted David Pagou who also his deputy in the previous job and Narcisse Tinkeu who was occupying the fitness coach position with the Intermediate Lions.
It unclear how government plans to react to the suspension of the national team staff they appointed, but information which cannot independently confirm have it that Professor Narcisse Mouelle has assured Brys he will continue as coach of Cameroon.
