Kenyan social media has erupted with outrage following the circulation of a video allegedly linking Harambee Stars goalkeeper Patrick Matasi who conceded four goals against Cameroon in Yaoundé to a possible betting ring with unnamed individuals plotting ‘a deal’, apparently to fix a football match.

In the video, Matasi appears to be listening and nodding in agreement as an unidentified individual, believed to be a recruiter, gives instructions on the next moves.

The former Kenya Police FC shot-stopper, who also played for Ethiopia’s Saint Georges FC, Tusker FC and AFC Leopards , was recently released by Police FC under unclear circumstances.

Three football lovers have taken to social media to express their fury after an undated video emerged online featuring Harambee Stars and Kakamega Homeboyz goalkeeper Patrick Matasi

It remains unclear who the fixtures in the amateur video are, or when it was filmed and the location. What is clear is that the video was recorded in a car, with the face of the Kenyan goalkeeper clearly visible.

“I repeat again before the boss, this is the first deal, I beg you,” says the man as Matasi nods in agreement.

The man adds, “You know how we have done this, I have never let you down, you have never let me down,” to suggest they have done this kind of business before.

“Me in my business with you, zero failure right?” the man asks the goalkeeper who in turn says, “True!”

“Whatever will be given to me, straight I forward to you. Immediately I forward to you, I will give you a phone call and the boss will confirm you have received, then the deal is on,” he tells Matasi who continues to agree to his deal.

The conversation continues and the man states what he’d love Matasi to do in the purported fixed match.

“That first half, bro what we want must come, then my deal should not go to anyone,” he concludes.

Matasi has been conceding some ‘cheap goals’ both in the national team and Kenya Police FC which have recently raised eyebrows with recent being two questionable goals against Cameroon in a 4-1 loss during the 2025 African Cup of Nations Qualifiers which dimmed Kenya’s chances of qualifying for the championship.

A cheaply conceded injury time goal against Kakamega Homeboyz and another one during a friendly match against Russia also raised eyebrows.

The leaked video has sparked condemnation across social media, with fans expressing their frustration. Among them was Afande Cele, who took to Facebook, lamenting: “It’s heartbreaking for those who take the legitimate route to see our game and industry grow. It has always been speculation, not knowing what to believe. But today, we have proof… this pierces so deep. First half, hold a draw… second half, let go… eeeihh.”

In a lengthy post, Cyprian Nyakundi remarked, “There have been instances where Matasi, despite his experience and skill, has conceded goals that seemed avoidable, leading to speculation about whether his lapses were due to complacency, poor form, or something more deliberate. Some of his mistakes have appeared uncharacteristic for a goalkeeper of his caliber.”

Matasi has been Harambee Stars first choice keeper for a long time, more so during the era of former head coach, Turk Engin Firat, but has been overlooked by the new coach Benni McCarthy.
