Cameroon’s goalkeeper Andre Onana and midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa have been named in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) team of the year for 2023.

The CAF team of the year was announced at the CAF Awards Gala in Marrakech, Morocco, on Monday, 11 December 2023.

The team was selected by a voting panel consisting of CAF Technical Committee, media professionals, Head Coaches & Captains of Member Associations and clubs involved in the group stages of the Interclub competitions.

Andre Onana, who joined Manchester United last July, had a stellar season with his former club Inter Milan.

Onana helped Inter win the Coppa Italia, beating Juventus 2–1 in the final, and the Supercoppa Italiana, defeating Napoli 3–0.

He also played a key role in Inter’s run to the Champions League final, where they faced Manchester City.

He made the most saves (39) and the most clean sheets (6) in the competition, saving 84.8% of shots, the highest percentage in that edition.

However, he could not prevent Inter from losing 2–1 to City, who scored a late winner through Kevin De Bruyne.

He made 41 appearances in all competitions for Inter, keeping 19 clean sheets.

At United this season, the shot stopper is on five clean sheet. He may have lost the best goalkeeper award to Morocco’s Yassine Bounou but this achievements, explains his feature amongst the best team of the year. The Cameroonian finished as 23rd on the Ballon d’or final rankings

As for Zambo, the midfielder had been one of the key players for Napoli in their successful 2023 campaign, which saw them win the Serie A title for the first time in 33 years.

The 28-years-old has been a versatile and dynamic presence in Napoli’s midfield, playing as a defensive midfielder, a box-to-box midfielder, or a right winger. He has contributed to both ends of the pitch, with his ability to recover the ball, cover space, and get forward.

He scored three goals and provided eight assists in 36 league appearances last season.

He has also been influential in Napoli’s run to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, where they were eliminated by eventual winners Manchester City. He scored two goals and assisted two more in eight games, including a stunning strike against Liverpool at Anfield in the group stage.

Zambo Anguissa has also been a key member of the Cameroon national team, helping them win bronze at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which they hosted.

The ex Fulham player has proven himself to be one of the best African midfielders in the world, and one of the most important players for Napoli and Cameroon.

This was the only recognition given to Cameroon player in this year’s Caf awards. Nevertheless, the ceremony was graced by legends such as; the FA president Samuel Eto’o, SYNAFOC president Geremi Njitap, and former African footballers of the year Patrick Mboma, Thomas Nkono, and Gaelle Enganamouit.
