The World football governing body has named experience Cameroonian referee Atezambong Fomo Carine on the list of Referees retained for the 2023 FIFA World Cup tournament in Australia and New Zealand.

FIFA published the list of match officials late last week including the name of the 38-year-old who is currently making her bag to travel to Algeria for the African Nations Championship, CHAN.

According to the decision Carine joins celebrated Malian assistant referee Fanta Kone on the shortlist of seven assistant referee retained for the tournament.

Salima Mukansanga of Rwanda who is just back from the 2022 men’s FIFA World Cup tournament in Qatar makes the cut as one of four referees from the continent.

Carine’s vast experience at the highest level has made her a regular in most competition’s these days. In the past 24 months, she has been assistant referee in the CHAN final, AFCON, Women’s CAF Champions League final and the semi finals of the AWCON plus the Women’s under-17 FIFA World Cup.

The inclusion of Carine who is also the only Cameroonian lady with VAR official experience should excite the next generation of Referees who can’t help but be inspired by her journey in the game.

The 24 nations tournament to happen in Australia and New Zealand will run from 20 July – 20 August 2023.
