  • Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting watched entire first-leg of the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League semi-final from the bench
  • Bayern Munich’s dominance saw the game finished 2-2 ahead of the return contest next week at the home of Real Madrid

Cameroon international Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting watched from the sides as record European Champions, Real Madrid came from behind to pull a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich in the first-leg of the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League semi-final.

Brazilian international Vinicius Jnr silenced the home fans at the Allianz Arena as he converted a late penalty to complete his brace and ensure goals from Leroy Sane and Harry Kane from the spot will not give any advantage to Bayern going into the reversed fixture in Spain.

Bayern Munich’s coach Thomas Tuchel opted to leave long time servant Choupo-Moting on the bench as the Bavarian went all out with the regular attack force of Kane, Jamal Musiala and Sane. Behind dominated the opening 15 minutes of the game while forcing Real to defend deep in their half and only make spontaneous breaks.

As it’s always been the case, Real sucked the pressure and picked their moment to hurt their opponents. A perfect-weighted ball from Toni Kroos put Vinicius through and the Brazilian punished Bayern Munich’s captain Manuel Neuer. Real kept their grip on proceedings which enabled them take the advantage to the pause.

Bayern Munich reappeared to be the side with the better half-time team talk as they re-emerged with more purpose and cutting edge.

Kane converted a 57th minute penalty to complete a quick turn around that was started by a superb low range effort from former Manchester City forward Sane just after resumption.

Real being 1-2 down and keen on avoiding their first defeat in this season’s competition multiplied pressure on the Bayern back-four with a little more load for Kim Minjae.

The South Korean defender eventually gave away a penalty of 10 minutes from regulation time. Vinicius perfectly dispatched the resulting penalty to make it 2-2.

Either side could have won it in the final moments of the contest, unfortunately poor finishing left the tie in a pulsating state going into the return-leg game next Tuesday at the historic Santiago Bernabeu. Choupo-Moting remains one of Bayern’s plethora of options that can create real impact in the reversed fixture a week tomorrow.
