AFCON 2023: Senegal win second group game against Cameroon to seal last 16 spot

Defending champions, Senegal made it two wins out of two group games and book a place in the Round of 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a 3-1 win over five time winners, Cameroon.

Ismaila Sarr was in the right place at the right time to get to a rebound inside the box and gleefully rifled the ball low inside the right post to give Senegal the lead in the 16th minute.

With a goal lead at half time, the holders didn’t rest on their lone goal and searched for a doubler in the second period.

The doubler eventually came in the 71st minute when Ismaila Sarr laid the ball off to Habib Diallo who slotted it into the back of the net from close range, leaving the goalkeeper helpless.

Indomitable Lions scored a goal in the 83rd minute to make the final seven minutes of the game a tough contest.

Olivier Ntcham put the ball on the head of Jean-Charles Castelletto who had the easy task to score into an empty net.

The West African side restored their two goal lead in the additional minutes of the second half.

Sadio Mane made a yard for himself after a well-taken pass inside the box and strike the ball into the bottom left corner.

The Teranga Lions maintained their top position in Group C with the maximum of six points after two games.

They will next face Guinea in their last group game to determine the group winners.

Cameroon will havre to win their last group game against Gambia to have any chance of progressing from the group stage with a point after two games.
