Nigeria’s senior men’s national team edged Guinea Bissau 1-0 in the last group game of the 2023 Africa Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Abidjan.
Stanley Nwabali, Clavin Bassey, Kenneth Omeruo, Semi Ajayi, Ola Aina, Joe Aribo, Frank Onyeka, Bright Osayi Samuel, Moses Simon, and Samuel Chukwueze started for the Super Eagles.
For the Wild Dogs, Jonas Mendes, Nanu, Opa Sangante, Edgar Ie, Houboulang Mendes, Nito, Janio Bikel, Carlos Mendes, Dalcio, Famana Quizera, and Zinho Gano started for the team.
An own goal opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 36th minute.
It was a pitiful moment for Opa Sangante who tried to clear a cross into the six-yard box but instead send the ball behind his own keeper.
In the additional minute of the first half, the three time African champions tried to double the lead.
Osimhen squandered a promising opportunity as he latched on to a perfect cross from the wing.
He produced a bullet header from around the penalty spot which went just wide of the right post.
The Napoli forward should really have done better with a close-range header, but he head it a whisker wide of the left post. The ball went out of play.
Nigeria at the end of the match finished second in Group A with seven points and inferior goals behind top placed Equatorial Guinea which thrashed Cote d’Ivoire 4-0.
