Nigeria forward Moses Simon emerged as the man of the match during Nigeria’s 1-0 win against Guinea Bissau in the last Group A encounter in Abidjan on Monday.
He played a pivotal role in ensuring that the Super Eagles secured a crucial win that sealed a place in the Round of 16 for the three-time African champions.
The FC Nantes star provided the cross which led to Opa Sangante’s own goal in the first half.
“Today I feel really good and happy. The most important thing is the victory for the team,” Simon said during his post-match reaction.
“Actually, we are not worried. For us, the most important thing is the three points. We don’t care if you like score 20 goals. The important thing for us is the victory.”
When asked if he and his teammates checked their phones to know what was happening in the game between Cote D’Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea, he said: “For me, I didn’t notice because I didn’t check my phone and believed my colleagues did not check their phone also. We just want to win and don’t care because we can see most of the big countries can end as best losers or in second position. We just want to play and win.
“It’s the instruction we got from the coach. When we are not with the ball we should wait for the ball and work on the counter.
“If you talk about a stronger side in Cameroon, I believe every team is struggling. Like Cameroon, they are struggling. Every team is struggling.” He concluded.
Jose Peseiro’s side finished second in Group A with seven points behind Equatorial Guinea, with the same points and superior goal difference.
