Equatorial Guinea’s president Theodore Obiang Nguema Mbasogog offered a special bonus of one million Euros plus €50 000 for each of the four goals scored by the Nzalang Nacional in their 4-0 drubbing of hosts Côte D’Ivoire in their final group stage game of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte D’Ivoire.

A brace from current tournament top scorer Emelio Nsue, Pablo Garnet and substitute Jannick Buyla was enough for Juan Micha Obiang’s team to produce one of the most shocking upsets of the tournament by beating the hosts with ease.

The 4-0 victory ensured the 2015 semi-finalist, Equatorial Guinea will win group A ahead of Nigeria, Côte D’Ivoire and Guinea Bissau.

Reacting to the victory, president Obiang Nguema who watched the game from home in Malabo declared Tuesday, January 23 a public holiday and dished out the some of 1.2 millions Euros to the team as additional motivation.

The entire staff is expected to receive one million Euros while the four goals scorers get €50 000 for each of their goals.

The move by the football-loving head of state is expected to spur the Equatorial Guinean players to do more in the competition in the days ahead.

Equatorial Guinea will face a team that failed to top its group in the round of 16 scheduled just after the end of the group stage of the competition.

The UNIFFAC flag bearers are through to the knockout of the competition for an unprecedented second edition running.
