Carlos Queiroz has parted ways with Ghana and will no longer continue as head coach of the Black Stars following a disastrous start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The decision comes after Ghana suffered back-to-back defeats in Group C, losing 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire before falling to a 4-2 defeat against The Gambia in Accra.
The defeat to The Gambia proved particularly damaging. Ghana raced into a 2-0 lead through Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan, but the Black Stars conceded four unanswered goals as The Scorpions completed a stunning comeback.
Queiroz accepted responsibility for the defeat and apologised to Ghanaian supporters after the match. The Portuguese coach had also faced growing calls to resign following the disappointing result.
The development represents a dramatic turnaround for Queiroz, who had only recently been retained to lead Ghana into the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
Queiroz had previously guided the Black Stars to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but Ghana’s poor beginning to the AFCON qualifiers has now brought his second spell in charge to an abrupt end.
Ghana are now facing an uncertain period as the Ghana Football Association prepares to determine the next direction of the national team and potentially begin the search for a new head coach.
For Queiroz, his return to the Black Stars ends after a short and turbulent spell, with the Portuguese coach leaving Ghana under intense scrutiny following the team’s disappointing start to the AFCON qualification campaign.
