André Onana continued his impressive start to life in Turkey on Saturday, producing another assured performance as Trabzonspor cruised to a 3-0 victory away to Samsunspor in the Turkish Süper Lig.
Onana was called into action several times as Samsunspor tried to find a way back into the contest, but the Cameroon international remained composed between the posts. He finished the match with six saves and a clean sheet, playing a key role in helping Trabzonspor protect their commanding advantage.
Trabzonspor did most of their damage before half-time. Ernest Muçi opened the scoring in the 28th minute before Chibuike Nwaiwu doubled the advantage eleven minutes later. Franculino then added a third just two minutes later to put the visitors firmly in control.
The task became more difficult for Trabzonspor when Melih Kabasakal was sent off in the 43rd minute, leaving the visitors to play the entire second half with ten men. Onana and his defence stood firm, however, denying Samsunspor any route back into the game.
The clean sheet adds to what has been an outstanding campaign so far for the former Manchester United and Inter Milan goalkeeper. Onana has prevented 4.89 goals this season, while his three clean sheets are among the most in the league.
His consistency has also pushed him into the conversation among the league’s best performers. With a Sofascore rating of 7.84, Onana currently ranks third among all players in the league, behind only Victor Osimhen and Mohamed Salah.
For Cameroon, it is another encouraging sign from a goalkeeper who appears to be rediscovering his best form. Class is permanent, and André Onana is certainly reminding everyone of that.
