Côte d’Ivoire delivered one of the biggest statements ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a stunning 2-1 comeback victory over France in an international friendly at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes on Thursday.

Facing one of the tournament favourites and playing away from home, the Elephants showed remarkable character to overturn an early deficit and hand Didier Deschamps’ side a rare defeat just days before the start of the World Cup.

France appeared on course for victory when rising star Rayan Cherki gave Les Bleus the lead before halftime. The hosts controlled large portions of the opening period and looked set to extend their advantage against an Ivorian side preparing for its first World Cup appearance since 2014.

However, Emerse Faé’s men emerged from the break transformed. Defender Guela Doue drew the Elephants level early in the second half after being released by a clever pass from Nicolas Pepe, silencing the French crowd and shifting the momentum firmly in favour of the African champions.

With confidence growing, Côte d’Ivoire continued to push forward and were rewarded six minutes from time when Amad Diallo completed the comeback. The winger finished off a swift attacking move to beat the French goalkeeper and secure a famous victory for the Elephants.

The result underlines the growing belief within the Ivorian camp ahead of the World Cup. Under coach Emerse Fae, Côte d’Ivoire have emerged as one of Africa’s most exciting teams, blending experienced figures such as Franck Kessie with a new generation of attacking talent led by Diallo, Simon Adingra and Yan Diomandé.

While France will remain among the favourites to challenge for the World Cup crown, Thursday’s defeat serves as a warning that nothing will come easy in North America. For Côte d’Ivoire, meanwhile, defeating one of world football’s giants is the perfect boost as they prepare to face Ecuador, Germany and Curaçao in Group E.

The Elephants have announced themselves on the world stage once again—and they head to the World Cup believing they can trouble anyone.
