  • The Blue Sharks of Cabo Verde have maintained their first position in Group D following a 1-0 victory against Cameroon
  •  The lone goal of the game was scored in the 54th minute by Dailon Livramento from Cape Verde
  •  This loss puts Cameroon in a difficult position regarding direct qualification for the World Cup

Substitute Dailon Livramento scored the lone goal for Cabo Verde Island to secure a crucial one-nil victory against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon this Tuesday at the Estadio Nacional de Cabo Verde. The win puts the Blue Sharks in optimal position to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as they open a four points gap on second-place Cameroon with two games left.

Cameroon entered the contest with their tails up giving their run of 14 games without defeat in the Marc Brys era. The Belgian gaffer made three changes to his starting XI from the 3-0 win against Mauritius Island, hoping to complete the double against Cape Verde they had beaten 4-1 in the reversed fixture in Yaounde.

Both sides adopted a cautious and quick counter breaks to hurt each other, but the chances were few and far between.

The best chance of the game fell to Zambo Anguissa who twisted his neck and directed a header into the bottom corner but it was saved by 39-Year-old Votinha in goal for the home side.

The solitary goal was scored by Dailon Livramento in the 54th minute, showcasing his impressive skill as he muscled past Carlos Baleba, powered through the Cameroonian defense, and calmly finished past Andre Onana from 14 yards out.

There were chances at both ends after the goal with substitute Danny Namaso and Vincent Aboubakar all coming closer while Andre Onana denied the Cabo Verdean with a brilliant one-on-one save to keep the score at 1-0.

The stadium erupted with joy from the home side after the full time whistle as Bubista’s team edge even closer to World Cup qualification and Cameroon nears elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup race.

This loss puts Cameroon in a precarious position, trailing Cape Verde by four points with only two matches remaining in Group D.

To secure direct qualification, Cameroon must win both of their final games – against Angola at home and Mauritius away. Meanwhile, Cape Verde’s victory brings them tantalizingly close to making history, as they edge nearer to becoming the smallest nation in terms of population to qualify for the World Cup finals.

Qualification chances for both teams

– Cape Verde needs to secure three points from their final two games against Libya away and Eswatini at home to guarantee their spot in the World Cup.
– Cameroon must win both their remaining matches and hope Cape Verde falters to maintain their direct qualification chances.
– Libya on the other hand, sits just one point behind Cameroon and could potentially battle for second place if the Indomitable Lions fail to qualify directly.

*Head-to-Head Record*

The two teams have faced each other nine times previously, with Cameroon holding a slight upper hand:
– Cameroon Wins : 4
– Cape Verde Wins: 3
– Draws: 2
After their last game, Cape Verde counts three wins against Cameroon.

The final two match days will be crucial in determining the fate of both teams. Will Cape Verde create history and qualify for the World Cup for the first time ever, or will Cameroon rally to secure their spot? The drama unfolds next month as these teams go back again to the pitch to re-emphasize their quest for a world cup slot.
