There was a full display of color, culture and beautiful football on Saturday at the Tiko Town Green stadium on the occasion of the launch of the third edition of the Tiko is Rising International Tournament bankrolled by Tiko-born Carole Malick Ndape.

The two football matches on the opening day pulled a large crowd of lovers of the beautiful game into the historic facility and a huge number of them went beyond watching the game. Dressed in the different colors of the neighbourhoods involved, they danced to the rhythm of the drums that were beaten from start to finish of the two games while others engaged vuvuzuelas to produce the kind of loud noise that had not been heard at the Town Green Stadium for a while.

On the pitch, football didn’t disappoint. Once the divisional delegate for Sports, Augustine Njiwah gave his blessings with thr simulated kickoff, the stage was set for some unforgettable spectacle.

In the first game of the afternoon, Down Beach FC stunned star-studded Keka 2 FC. Keka 2 had entered the contest as favourites, on the grounds of their quality players. As football works in its own ways, they were left to regret their misses as they suffered a shock defeat. Prince Iko and his brother Kenneth starred for the men from the water side. Iko’s header just upon the resumption of the second segment proved decisive as the game finished 1-0.

The defeat didn’t dampen the mood of the Keka 2 fans as they partied an drank in huge quantities while dancing in a show of fairplay and celebration of the unique moment provided by one of their own.

That Down Beach result in the opening game proved once again that football is unpredictable, and hunger is the most decisive ingredient for good result not just players.

Iko bagged home an extra 5000 francs CFA as ‘Man of the match’ in the win – a prize donated by Tiko Palace for each of the matches of the entire competition.

In the second game witnessed by hundreds of fans, favourites Water Tank FC defeated a promising LESA side by 4-0. Louis Ediage and Ako Alexis were on the score sheet.

Though Lesa displayed glimpses of huge potential, inexperienced was their undoing. Strange enough, they gave away three penalties in the game and were made to pay for their defensive shortcomings.

Louis Ediage earned the man of the match award in the game as a reward for his brace while Emango Zidane was voted best defender.

Three matches have been scheduled this Sunday with the likes of Apostolic Church , Newlayout, Casino FC all expected in action.

Matches of the one month long competition will be played on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays in the presence of the football crazy population of Tiko, at least ln the evidence of the past editions and the opening game of this edition.

The prize money of this year’s edition of the competition stands at One Million FCFA for the winner and another One for the rest of the podium teams.

The Tiko is rising Tournament donated by the former Tiko United forward has proven to be a success from its inception to date and looks destined for even better days.
