- Chelsea beaten 2-1 by Servette in UEFA Conference League
- Blues progress to league phase by a 3-2 aggregate score-line
- Christopher Nkunku impressed just like Cameroon’s Gaël Ondoua in the Servette midfield
Gaël Ondoua’s FC Servette recorded a stunning 2-1 win against Chelsea FC on Thursday evening in the second leg of the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League playoffs tie but progressed courtesy of their aggregate win.
Despite the defeat, Chelsea moved into the league phase of the Europa Conference League and avoided the humiliation of an early exit.
Enzo Maresca’s side led 2-0 after the first-leg at Stamford Bridge a week ago and extended that advantage after 14 minutes through Christopher Nkunku’s penalty after Mykhailo Mudryk had been fouled by Keigo Tsunemoto.
Christopher Nkunku put the Blues ahead from perfect penalty but Jeremy Guillemenot cancelled out that strike in the first half, while Servette substitute Enzo Crivelli secured what is a famous win for the Swiss side, although it wasn’t enough to take the tie.
The roars of the home crowd pushed Servette on when six minutes of stoppage time was indicated and they very nearly forced extra-time when Timothe Cognat curled a shot agonisingly wide and the dreams faded on the night.
The game finished 2-1 in favour of Chelsea but Gaël Ondoua and mates already made history by beating a European giant.
Chelsea are hoping to claim top seeding in Friday’s six-match league phase draw, which starts around 2.30pm Cameroon time, but quite whether their defeat to Servette impacts on their status is unclear.
What we do know is this Friday a computer will randomly draw one opponent from each of the six pots, ranked according to their UEFA coefficient, and designate.
