Equatorial Guinea recorded their first win at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a 4-2 victory over Guinea Bissau at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium, Ebimpe, Abidjan, on Thursday.
It took the first 21 minutes of play for Equatorial Guinea to take the lead through captain, Emilio Nsue Lopez.
Pablo Ganet displayed great vision and sent a pass to Nsue who showed brilliant composure inside the box to bury the ball inside the right post.
The Nzalang Nacional ought to have doubled the lead five minutes later when Josete Miranda unleashed a thunderous effort from the edge of the box and the ball crashed off the bar.
In the 37th minute, the Djurtus evened the scoreline thanks to a goal by Franculino Gluda Dju.
Esteban Orozco set the ball towards his goal in an attempt to intercept a pass leading to the goal.
In a dramatic moment, Guinea Bissau almost went ahead when Saul Coco was trying to get the ball but clattered into the legs of the opponent inside the box.
Referee Samuel Uwikinda signaled for a penalty which was canceled after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check.
Two goals in the second half by Jose Antonio Miranda Boacho and Nsue extended Equatorial Guinea’s lead to 3-1.
Nsue completed his hat-trick in the 64th minute to put the game beyond the reach of their opponents.
Jose Correia reduced the deficit for Guinea Bissau but it wasn’t enough to prevent another loss.
With the win, Juan Micha’s side moved top of the table with four points after teo games ahead of Cote D’Ivoire clash with Nigeria.
