Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana Onana returns for Cameroon’s games against Burundi and Senegal

• ‘This is the time to unite, to work in harmony for our common good: Cameroon. Andre Onana,’ he says after talks with the government.

• ‘Faced with manipulation, lies and abuse of power, I choose to remain faithful to my ideal.”

Andre Onana Onana has announced he is reversing his decision to retire from international football, and will report for Cameroon’s matches against Burundi, counting for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier and the friendly against Senegal this month.

The Manchester United stopper made the announcement this Monday via a release on social media, in which he emphasized his appreciation towards the government of Cameroon for properly dealing with a situation he repeatedly stated was fueled by lies telling.

Onana was sent home unceremoniously from the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, after one game. The Cameroon football federation (FECAFOOT) announced he was indisciplined, and even sent a letter to Inter Milan, his employer at the time, due to an incident all parties have not publicly detail about to date.

Close to a year down the line, Onana has come out of retirement, citing his dreams and love for the nation as the prime push factors.

“In the world of football, just like in life, defining moments arise, requiring crucial choices. In recent months I have been confronted with trials marked by injustice and manipulation. Yet my unwavering love and attachment to my homeland, Cameroon, remains intact,” he began.

“My desire to represent my country has never wavered since my youth, and this aspiration remains an inseparable part of my identity. Nothing and no one can shake this conviction. I respond to the call of my nation with unwavering certainty, aware that my return is not only aimed at honoring my dream, but also to respond to the expectations and support of Cameroonians, who deserve a national team determined to shine.”

The 27-year carefully credited the government for the efforts made to ensure he returns to the national team after the forgettable experience.

“I would like to salute the government which is working tirelessly to build a better Cameroon for all. My deepest thoughts go to the Cameroonian people to whom I say thank you very much for their support and whom I look forward to seeing again.”

Onana has been out of all of Cameroon’s commitment this year, with some suggesting there’s more to the Qatar brouhaha than the eyes meet. His comments upon quitting retirement hightens the fears of uneasy calm.

He added: Faced with manipulation, lies and abuse of power, I choose to remain faithful to my ideal, proudly representing a country that deserves our sincere commitment. It is time to unite, to work in harmony for our common good: Cameroon.”

“Time, the infallible judge of all things, will ultimately enlighten us and reveal the correctness of our actions. My commitment to Cameroon remains unwavering, and I am determined to play my part to see it prosper. So, see you next September 12 in Garoua for our qualification for the next African Football Cup of Nations.”

Andre Onana abandons retirement

Coach Rigobert Song has been named Onana in Cameroon’s squad for the crucial 2023 AFCON qualifier against the Swallows of Burundi on September 12, at the Roumde Adjia Stadium in Garoua.

Cameroon, currently second in group C with four points needs at least a draw from the game to occupy one of the two qualification spots.

The team will travel to France to face Senegal in a friendly dependent on qualification for the AFCON.

Onana helped Cameroon finished third at the last AFCON tournament on home soil and has made himself available to add to his 42 caps for his nation seeking a 21st qualification for the prestigious continental tournament.

Onana will compete with 2017 AFCON winner, Fabrice Joseph Ondoa Ebogo of Nimes Olympique in France and Saudi Arabia based Devis Epassy Mbota of Ahba SC, who deputized for him to good effect, especially against Brazil during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
