The ninth edition of the Easter cup Patricia Berthelot in Douala has concluded its group stages, and the U17 Lions of Cameroon have unfortunately been shown the exit door.
The young squad, led by coach Jean Pierre Fiala Fiala, faced a series of challenging matches that tested their mettle and ultimately led to their early departure from the tournament.
The team’s campaign began on a sour note as they succumbed to a heavy 5-2 defeat at the hands of EFBC. Hopes of redemption were dashed in the subsequent match against Unions sportive of Abong Mbang, where the Lions failed to score.
It wasn’t until their final match against Cotonsport of Garoua that they managed to secure a point through a goalless draw, but it was too little, too late.
Off camera, head coach Jean Pierre Fiala expressed that the competition served as a proper evaluation test for his group, who are diligently preparing for the UNIFFAC U17 tournament scheduled to take place in Gabon come November.
He remains optimistic about the team’s potential and growth through these challenging experiences.
In other developments, the 2023 finalist Best Stars were also eliminated in the group stages, managing only a single point from a draw and two defeats.
Newcomer Anafoot, despite a valiant effort, finished their first appearance at the Easter cup with three points, which were not enough to advance them to the next round after a 0-2 defeat to a resilient Aigle of the Menoua
Aigle, on their path, leads pool B with 7 points. In their debut, the Menoua team overcame opponents such as Anafoot and Colombe and secured a draw against Best Stars to qualify for the semi-finals.
The semi-finalists of this year’s Easter cup include EFBC, Aigle, Colombe, and Union sportive of Abong Mbang, with Cotonsport, Anafoot, Best Stars, and the U17 Lions set to play the classification game.
The competition, which has been unfolding at the Reunification Annex stadium since Monday, is set to conclude this Sunday. It has been a tournament filled with surprises, upsets, and valuable lessons for all teams involved, particularly for the young U17 Lions of Cameroon, who will undoubtedly take this experience as a stepping stone towards greater achievements in the UNIFFAC competition slated for November in Gabon.
