CHAN 2022 to produce a new winner

The 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) has reached the quarter-finals in Algeria and a new winner will be crowned come February 4th.

The above is brought about by the fact that none of the eight teams that reached the quarterfinals has ever won the CHAN trophy.

Hosts Algeria and African powerhouses Senegal, Ghana, and Ivory Coast are in the last eight but have never touched silverware.

Mozambique, Mauritania, and debutants Madagascar will be playing in the quarterfinals for the first time.

Niger is in the last eight for only the second time having been there in 2014 the last time out at a tournament held in South Africa.

Two-time winners the Democratic Republic of Congo who won the inaugural tourney in 2009 and later in 2016 did not go beyond the group stages at the 2022 edition.

Libya is the only other side that won CHAN previously in 2014 that participated in the 2022 tournament in Algeria but did not reach the quarterfinals.

Another two-time winning team Morocco who are the defending champions having won it in 2020 and 2018 missed out on a chance of maybe winning it thrice consecutively after they failed to honor this year’s competition.

Tunisia who won the second CHAN tournament in 2011 did not qualify for the seventh edition.
