On a drizzly Saturday morning May 25, the University of Garoua campus came alive with anticipation as the 24th edition of the University Games unfolded.

The Minister of State, Minister of Higher Education Jacques Fame Ndongo presided over the opening ceremony, flanked by Minister of Sports and Physical Education Narcisse Mouelle Kombi and other government dignitaries.

The overarching theme—”University sport and professionalization: major assets for an entrepreneurial university”—set the tone for a week of spirited competition and camaraderie.

The colorful caravan of university and institute fan clubs paraded through the streets, their songs and war cries echoing the rich cultural diversity of the country.

From the governor’s services to the heart of the city, they proudly announced their presence, infusing Garoua with youthful energy and pride.

For the next seven days—from May 25 to June 1—Garoua will host this grand gathering of athletic talent. Twenty-two universities and institutes will vie for glory, showcasing their prowess in one of the largest youth sports events.

Yet, amidst the excitement, a shadow looms—the tragic loss of Samuel Nako Mofeme on Thursday morning, a member of the University of Buea delegation.
