The Black Stars of Ghana have dropped two crucial points this Thursday at the Stade Olympique Marechal Idriss Deby Itno as they conceded late equalizer from Celestin Ecua to settle for a 1-1 draw against the Sao of Chad.
Coach Otto Addo’s Ghanaian side got off to the best possible start when free scoring Jordan Ayew scored his sixth goal of the campaign just 17 minutes upon kickoff and it looked enough until substitute Celestin Ecua snatched an 89th-minute equaliser for the hosts.
Mohamed Kudus in one of his trademark runs broke into the box and made space before picking Ayew who beat Allabatnam Gadin to silence the home crowd watching their national team in their home soil for the first time in a long time.
With the early goal advantage and the intimidating demands of playing away from home, Ghana reverted to proper game management, given they were keeping the ball for a longer spells after the opener.
Chad imposed a more physical approach, turning to their bench to introduce fresh legs.
Aziz Tchaouana and Hiver Amine were thrown in by coach Raoul Savoy as he pushed not to suffer a defeat in his debut in the Chadian dugout.
Ghana made their own changes which helped them create a number of chances but they didn’t take them.
Those misses came back to hunt them as Chad finally got their equalizer. Ecua was picked in the box by Mbangossoum. He turned and swept home the leveller to ignite the stadium and deny Ghana a fifth straight win in the section.
Despite the draw, Ghana remains atop the group with 16 points, four better than second placed Comoros with two matches to play.
Comoros will face Mali who have nine points to th later today in a fixture that could tighten the race before Ghana host Mali on September 8.
With Madagascar (10) also in the mix, Group I remains delicately poised with six points still available.
