Malcom Bokele Mputu has described his joy at being included in Cameroon’s 24-man for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier matches against Namibia later this month.
Malcom couldn’t hold back his joy after receiving a call-up from Rigobert Song in view of the Brave Warriors clash. The Girondin of Bordeaux sweeper has enjoyed a great season for his club and questions over his future in the French Ligue have surfaced, which has affected his status as he earns his country’s recognition.
For a country that was at the World Cup three months ago with some high profile defenders, Malcom’s place in the squad few months after was far from certain but his rise at his club has earned him a place.
Cameroon doesn’t lack options but Song has placed his confidence on the French-born defender who is also eligible for DR Congo and he couldn’t hide his delight after getting the information.
“Glory to God! Happy to be invited to my country’s first team for the first time,” Malcom wrote on Instagram.
The23-year-old has made 19 appearances and scored twice for Bordeaux this season from the center-back role.
The former FC Metz and Villefranche half-back was previously selected with Cameroon’s U23, but never played a game.
The camp will be a first full engagement with the Indomitable Lions fraternity for the man born to a Congolese father and a Cameroonian mother.
Malcom is one of four new additions initiated by Song. Olivier Kemen of Kayserispor, Benjamin Elliott of Chelsea plus Albacete Balompie’s Flavien Enzo Boyomo are the others in view of the Namibia double confrontation.
Cameroon hosts the Brave Warriors on March 24 at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium before traveling to Pretoria for Day 4 against the same opponents at the Dobsonville stadium.
The five-time African champions have three points from one game. They currently lead the group that has Kenya, Burundi as other contenders for a place in next year’s tournament in Cote D’Ivoire.
