Blow: Bayern’s Choupo out of Augsburg clash

Eric Maxim Eric Choupo Moting is out of FC Bayern’s home clash against Augsburg this evening – paving the way for Leroy Sane to make his long-awaited return to the starting line-up.

Manager Julian Nagelsmann says Choupo has been struggling with the back injury that forced him to off eight minutes from the end of Wednesday’s 2-0 win against PSG in the UEFA Champions League.

The manager has confirmed the 33-year-old has been accorded more rest and recovery time which makes him unavailable for the match day 24 fixture.

This recent twist three days after a bruising clash against PSG during which Choupo, who scored Bayern’s first, was targeted for some rough treatment.

With Choupo sidelined, Sane is now in line to make his first start for the Bavarians in a while.

Choupo has been Bayern’s main man this season. Though not noted for scoring many goals in a game, the former PSG, Stoke City and Schalke 04 goal getter is his club’s lead scorer this campaign with 17 goals and three assists in 26 games across all competitions.

The former Mainz man who also scored last weekend in the Bundesliga will return after the Augsburg fixture, hoping to recover fully before the March FIFA window which will see him represent Cameroon against Namibia in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier games on March 24 and 28 in Yaounde and Pretoria respectively.

Choupo switched sporting allegiance to Cameroon 13 years ago and has gone on to score 22 goals in 74 caps.
