Leading the medal tally, Team Cameroon dazzled at the Abidjan African Judo Open, securing a total of eight medals across various categories and clinching the top spot.
The team’s outstanding performance was highlighted by Heukoua Douanla Erna Cindy, who claimed silver in the 63kg category, Baba Matia Marie Céline, who took home bronze in the 53kg, and Abomo Genevieve Rolande Yaelle, who won gold in the -70kg category, replicating her junior category success.
The men’s team also made a mark, with Bugueng Kombou Rayan earning bronze in the Juniors under 81kg category and Ngae Yohane winning gold in the same weight class. This remarkable achievement set the stage for the broader competition.
The second edition of the Abidjan African Judo Open, which unfolded in Cote D’Ivoire, gathered over 400 athletes from 40 countries, including the United States, Portugal, the Philippines, and Lebanon.
The event was bifurcated into the Cadets and Juniors African Cup for African athletes aged 15 to 20, affiliated with the African Judo Union (UAJ), and the International Open, sanctioned by the International Federation of Judo and Associated Disciplines (FIJDA).
This convergence of talent unfolded between June 8-9 and it underscored the event’s significance as a melting pot of judo excellence.
