Cameroonian Judoka Richelle Anita Soppi Mbella made history by clinching the country’s only gold medal at the African Judo Open held in Marrakech. Competing in the +78kg Women’s category, the 34-year-old athlete demonstrated her prowess on Sunday, June 2.
This remarkable achievement adds to Soppi Mbella’s impressive collection of medals across various competitions.
Notably, she secured gold at the 2024 African Championships in Cairo and claimed a silver medal at the African Open in Yaoundé in 2019. Her silver medal at the African Open in Dakar in 2023 further highlighted her consistent performance. Triumphing at the African Open in Luanda in 2024 solidified her reputation as a top judoka.
In addition to Soppi Mbella’s success, two other Cameroonian athletes also stood out. Daniel Mepoui Anong secured a silver medal in the +100kg men’s category, while Georgia Wesly Djengue Moune earned a bronze in the -78kg women’s category.
Overall, Cameroon finished in third place, trailing behind Argentina (with two gold medals) and France (who amassed seven gold, four silver, and four bronze medals). The African Judo Open took place from June 1 to 2, 2024, in Marrakech, Morocco, attracting 143 competitors from 30 countries across four continents.
