Cameroon’s Men’s Amputee Football Team has been compelled to withdraw from the inaugural African Amputee football cup of nations set to take place in Cairo, Egypt.

The team, alongside 15 other nations, was poised to debut in the tournament with aspirations of securing a spot in the 2026 Amputee World Cup.

Regrettably, these aspirations have been dashed due to financial constraints. Reports from the Cameroon News Agency indicate that the Ministry of Sports did not process the team’s travel documents in a timely manner, thwarting their journey to Egypt.

Further investigation by Kick442 has revealed that the situation stems from subpar organization and mismanagement within the amputee federation. Some team members have reported being notified about their non-participation on May 17, merely one day before the competition’s commencement.

Previously, the team had appealed for support during their training camp in Yaoundé last March, but their pleas were met with minimal response from the ministry.

The absence of Cameroon from the African Nations Cup signifies the forfeiture of the federation’s ambitions to compete in the World Cup, as the tournament also served as a qualifying event.

The Cameroon Amputee Football Team joins a list of national teams that have missed international events; for instance, the handball lionesses were unable to attend the Olympic qualifiers in Germany due to visa complications.

The African Amputee Football Cup of Nations is the first continental tournament for national amputee teams. Initially, 16 teams were expected to compete, but with the withdrawal of Cameroon, Rwanda, and Senegal, only 13 remain in contention for the championship.
