  • Wassou Goue scored and assisted this Sunday to cause a 2-0 win for Cotonsport this Sunday
  • The 19-year-old is the first player to be involved in both goals in the new look Super Cup
  • Coton secured their maiden Super Cup after the 2-0
  • It’s the only domestic trophy that the 18-time Cameroon winners had not won before this Sunday

Patient Wassou Goue and Koulagna Aziz Bassane scored two first-half goals as Cotonsport beat Fovu of Baham 2-0 in Douala to win the 2023 Cameroon Super Cup for the first time.

19-year-old Wassou was the star of the night as he scored the opener and laid the second to secure the first trophy in the Daniel Breard era of Cotonsport.

The winners of last season’s Elite One championship and Cup of Cameroon faced off at the Bepanda Omnisport stadium in Douala, where thousands turned out to live the unique encounter.

Despite Gadin Allabatnan being called into action several times in the game, Coton controlled the majority of possession and went ahead four minutes into the game through a Wassou penalty. Lovis Acha gave away the penalty when he brought down Aziz in the Fovu box.

Wassou stepped up and put the ball past goalkeeper Junior Mbiandji to make it 1-0 after four minutes.

Fovu continued to show promise, they lacked purpose in the final third and it was the Elite One champions who looked the most likely to score the game’s second goal.

21-year-old Aziz scored the second for the Cotonites in the 34th minute when he connected Wassou’s cross to head home a deserved second before the break.

Fovu and Cotonsport created a number of half chances in the second segment but Leonel Ntebeu, Stephane Ikpeme and co couldn’t add the number of goals on offer for the thousands that turned out.

Wassou was replaced in the 80th with coach Daniel Breard certain that his goal and assist had done the job for his side.

Cotonsport’s attacking duo Emmanuel Chamdjou and Aziz remained constant mecace to Aminou Illiasou and Acha Lovis in the heart of the Fovu defence.

The score remained 2-0 by the time referee Tanyi Shadrack had the final blast of the whistle, thus amounting to Coton’s first ever super cup and first trophy under their French coach.

The results means Coton are winners of the Super Cup which they lost to Fovu last season.

Fovu will come back another season to try to win their second Super Cup trophy.

Full-time:

Cotonsport 2-0 Fovu of Baham

Wassou Goue (Pen) 5′, Aziz Bassane 34′

Both clubs will switch their attention to the MTN Elite One championship which will continue with the rest of the match day one fixture on Wednesday throughout the national territory.
