President Samuel Eto’o Fils of the Cameroon football federation (FECAFOOT) has been mandated to continue as president of the institution despite tabling his resignation during a crisis meeting to discuss the dismal performance of the national team during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

This Monday’s meeting at the Hilton Hotel in Yaoundé had at the top of the agenda the evaluation of the Indomitable Lions’ AFCON campaign which ended in the round 16.

In a strange turn of events, Eto’o announced he was resigning due to the poor performance in the competition and other recent tournaments but according to the release, his request was rejected.

“The Executive Committee of the Cameroon football federation held a session this Monday, February 5 at the Hilton Hotel. The agenda focused on the evaluation of the senior men’s national team at the AFCON in Côte D’Ivoire.”

“At the beginning of the meeting, president Eto’o Fils tabled his resignation to the members of the federal organ, inviting them to do likewise in good faith,” a portion of the release read before adding;

“At the end of the discussions and subsequent deliberations, the Executive Committee decided to maintain the current mandate and thus unanimously rejected the president’s resignation thereby renewing their confidence in him to continue with the same spirit of reconstruction and development of Cameroon football at all levels.”

Eto’o was voted into office in a tightly contested FECAFOOT elections of December 2021, edging Seidou Mbombo Njoya into the Tsinga office.

His time in office has been characterized by a series of controversies and a run of results for the different national teams which are farfetched from the standards he promised during his blockbuster campaigns that seduced even his rivals.

Cameroon has suffered disappointing group stage exits at the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN), U-17 AFCON, 2022 FIFA World Cup plus eight finals crash in AFCON 2023 and AWCON 2022.

Whether Eto’o stays in office or otherwise his stint in office has been marked by a record low despite his continuous public manifestation of quest for success.
