  • Cameroon moved from world number 56 to 68 but remained fifth on the continent
  • The team’s recent outings have been sanctioned by results reflective of the drop
  • The Indomitable Lionesses could have a say about the ranking during their double Olympic games qualifier appointment against the Super Falcons on February 23 and 26 in Douala and Abuja respectively

The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon have dropped from World number 56 to 68 per the recent FIFA Coca-Cola rankings released on February 21.

The performance based classification of national teams for the month of February 2024 shows Cameroon have dropped 12 places, likely as a consequence of their recent elimination from the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AWCON) race and the 0-2 defeat to Uganda in the first-leg of the Paris 2024 Olympic games though they eventually qualified courtesy a 3-2 aggregate win.

Though, the Indomitable Lionesses dropped in the global perspective, they remain fifth on the continent, behind Nigeria, Morocco, South Africa and Zambia.

Coach Jean Baptiste Bisseck and his team could have a say about their current rankings within the next seven days when they face Africa’s number one – the Super Falcons of Nigeria in the third round Paris 2024 Olympic games qualifier. A win against a higher rank nation as in the case of Nigeria and eventual qualification for the games will propel the multiple AWCON vice champions to a more befitting position by the time the next rankings are released. Otherwise results will obviously have a reversed effect on the already uncomfortable rankings.

The country’s men and women’s football team are faced with a strange low these days due to the performances in their various international engagements. However, a cross section of pundits hold that its only a matter of time before the ball is set in motion towards achievement of results reflective of the jealous reputation of the central African nation built over the years in a discipline (football) few could come close to Cameroon in the past.
