The population of Garoua manifested their love for football and the Indomitable Lions brand again on Wednesday, as they took to the streets of the city from the Airport to Rebadou Hotel just to welcome the senior national team to the city for the first time since 2010.

The five-time African champions are in Garoua to play a crucial TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier game against the Swallows of Burundi on Tuesday, September 12.

The Vincent Aboubakar led Cameroon team arrived at the chief town of the North Region for the Group C match day six on Wednesday, September 6 evening, on board a Camairco Airbus that flew them in from Yaoundé.

Upon arrival at the Garoua international Airport, football and State officials plus the Airport staff warmly received coach Rigobert Song’s team while hundreds waited outside the exit to chant local welcome songs and cheer the players.

The homecoming of former Cotonsport trio Moumie Ngamaleu, Zambo Anguissa and Vincent Aboubakar made the population even more excited to see boys they once watched playing for their local club.

Song’s team boarded the rebranded bus offered by Cotonsport and quickly drove to their Rebadou Hotel base, through streets filled by Cameroonians or simply lovers of the national team.

The team which had assembled in Yaoundé since Sunday will continue their preparations for the game.

Cameroon currently occupying the second spot in Group C needs at least a draw against the Swallows of Burundi on Tuesday at the Roumde Adjia stadium to qualify for next year’s 2023 AFCON tournament in Côte D’Ivoire.

Burundi needs maximum points from the fixture to seal qualification for the AFCON. They have been camping in Douala and will travel to Garoua on Friday morning.
