Reigning Algerian champions CR Belouizidad of Cameroonian forward Wamba Leonel Djuffo have been drawn against 2022/23 CAF Champions League favourites Mamelodi Sundowns in the quarter-final of this season’s competition.
The event carried out this Wednesday, April 4 at the Mövenpick Hotel Cairo, Egypt produced some mouthwatering ties in the last eight of the competition amongst which is the meeting of the South African and Algerian champions.
Sundowns swept past four national league champions to win Group C with 16 points from a possible 18 while Belouizidad earned qualification from a tough Group B that had Zamalek, Esperance of Tunis and Al Mereikh. Wamba scored twice in six group stage games to help his side finish behind Esperance.
Elsewhere, vice champions Al Ahly SC of Egypt who finished behind Sundowns in Group C will face Morocco’s Raja Casablanca, who scored a record 17 goals in and finished top of their group.
JS Kabylie will face 2018 champions Esperance of Tunis while holders Wydad Athletic Club of Casablanca have a date with Tanzanian giants Simba SC.
The first-leg of the ties will be played in the last-but-one weekend of April while the second-leg matches are scheduled for the last weekend of the month.
The winner between JS Kabylie and Esperance will battle the winner between Al Ahly SC and Raja Casablanca in the semi-final.
The other semi-finalists will be produced by the ties of Simba SC against Wydad and CRB versus Mamelodi Sundowns.
The final of this season’s competition returns to the home and away format of the yesteryear.
