  • Rigobert Song lasted two years at the helm of the Indomitable Lions and won six games of 23 in charge
  • A search for his replacement is currently on and his successor will be announced before the end of next month

Cameroon’s minister of Sports and Physical education, Professor Narcisse Mouelle Kombi has announced Rigobert Song Bahanag is no longer the coach of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.

A release signed by the law professor this Wednesday, February 28 confirmed Song’s two-year signed in February 2022 will not be renewed.

Minister’s confirmation of Song’s departure

“I have the honor to notify you of your contract expiration…..”

“Also, it is not possible for the government to extend your contract as the selectioneur manageur of the Cameroon senior men’s national team,” Minister Moulle Kombi’s statement read.

Song thus becomes the first casualty of the dismal and lackluster performance of the indomitable lions of Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote D’Ivoire which ended in a disappointing eighth final defeat to Nigeria.

Appointed on February 28, 2022, to replace Toni Conceição, the former indomitable lions defender has been in charge of the team for 23 matches, recording six wins, eight draws and nine defeats.

Meanwhile, his predecessor, Toni Conceicao had been in charge for 24 matches recording 14 victories with six draws and just three defeats.

Our sources have it that government of Cameroon have set up a committee to recruit a new trainer before the March FIFA window.

Raymond Domenech, George Elokobi, Tom Saintfliet and Achille Webo are some of the names that have appeared in the rumour mill as potential candidates to take over from Rigobert Song.
