- 1984 Bronze medalist dies at 57
57-year-old Cameroonian boxer, Martin Ndongo Ebanga, has died at 57,after a long protracted illness.
Ebanga passed away on March 6,in Yaoundé at the Hôpital de la Caisse, where he had been admitted for a long while. His demise was announced during the 8:00 pm news cast on CRTV.
He died after a successful head surgery.Ebanga was in a precarious state since 2022.Faced with his poor health condition, the latter’s wife was oblige to make public calls,towards persons of good will for assistance.
Ebanga won the first Olympic bronze medal for Cameroon, in boxing during the US, Los Angeles Olympics,in 1984.
Martin Ebanga’s boxing adventure kicked-off in 1978,in Yaoundé with the help of Jean Paul Naanga, former captain of the Cameroon national boxing team.
In 1970 he joined the “Ecurie du Club Sioux 2000”,owned by Maître Ayissi Jean Baptiste in the 61 Kg category.After his brilliant performance in the African Games and American Olympics, he benefited from several training programs abroad.
In 1988 he secured a ticket for the Seoul Olympics in South Korea. Though favorite,he was outsmarted by Kenyan boxer Kamau David.
The ten times winner of the Cameroon boxing championship,spend part of his boxing professional career in Luxembourg. And took retirement in 1996.
