  • The Bamenda Municipal stadium could become part of the city’s main market in the days ahead
  • Displaced stakeholders whose shops were consumed by fire in the main market last month have been told there a likelihood they continue life at the stadium
  • A bulk of the traders have rejected the idea in preference of reconstructed shops

Officials of the Bamenda City council are considering the use of the Bamenda Municipal stadium as a makeshift market for traders whose shops were consumed by fire last month at the main market.

Kick442.com has gathered from KNN that Mayor Paul Achobong has told traders there is a likelihood they resume activities at the incomplete stadium site on temporary basis until their shops at the market are rebuilt.

Hundreds of traders lost fortunes following the Bamenda main market inferno of February 22 but it’s our understanding that the March 6 proposal from the Mayor hasn’t gone down well with the victims who prefer their shops be reestablished.

The abandoned Bamenda Municipal stadium project was initiated on April 20, 2016, by the then President of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), Tombi A Roko Sidiki accompanied by North West Governor Adolph Lele Afrique in the placement of the foundation stone.

Close to years down the road, the foundation stone itself is nowhere to be found. Works had been halted just months into the project and some materials still parked in the stadium in an advanced depreciating state.

Attempts to previous use the venue was met by stive resistance with reference to an injunction order. It’s unclear how usage for a non-football venture will be possible, however, the City mayor has the final say on the infrastructure.
