Basketball: We’re the new phenomenon in Nigeria’s Basketball League, Coach Tony hints as Bayelsa Blue Whales storm Asaba

Coach Tony Nelson of Blue Whales of Asaba has hinted his side is the next big thing in Nigerian Basketball going into Atlantic Conference phase 2.

Ahead of the Zenith Bank Women’s Basketball League, Bayelsa Blue Whales on Monday left Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital for Asaba.

Coach Tony Nelson who led the delegation says high premium has been placed on the young talents to make the state proud.

Siasia Stadium, shortly before departure, the multiple time winner of the Nestle Milo Secondary School Basketball Champion said he was impressed with the Technical skills and knowledge of his players

Tony acknowledged that the quality of his players such as understanding of plays, positioning, and spacing on the court were one of the reasons for the team’s excellent display in Akure.

“Well we thank God for phase 1 because we were the second best team behind the first team in Nigeria first bank and now we are once again ready for the second phase.”

Coach Tony who lamented lack of funds while they depart said he is optimistic that the team would surpass the performance at Akure during the phase-1 where they were tagged giant killers.

Tony Nelson advocated for improvement in arears of funding to enable the girls concentrate and compete optimally against their peers in all clubs.

Despite the financial glitches coach Tony Nelson commended the Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri and the Commissioner for Youth and Sports champion Igali for the unresolved support since establishment.

Tony However, called for more financial support in creating enabling environment for the girls to beat off competition from the league’s so called ‘big clubs’ who may have scouted their players.

“The team is well prepared, we’ve been training although we took loans to be able to do somethings but that’s sacrifice”

“We believe that soon things will get better because the big clubs are monitoring our situation to see how they can lure our players away”

“The Bayelsa State Government has done a lot for us but we need more, as i speak no release of fund yet but like I said we hope things will get better. ”
