Algeria and Burkina Faso get 2024 WAFCON Qualifiers off to flying starts

The First Round of the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations (AWCON) Qualifiers got underway with victories for Algeria, Burkina Faso, and Ghana in the first-leg games on Wednesday.

Algeria recorded a 2-1 away win over Uganda to brighten their resolve to make it to the second round.

Goals from Imane Chabel and Ghouthia Habiba Karchouni gave the North Africans a two-goal lead.

Fauzia Najjemba reduced the deficit for the host in the 87th minute but could not prevent a loss ahead of the return leg in Algeria.

Burkina Faso also earned a 3-2 win away from home against Eswatini.

Balguissa Sawadogo, Ramata Sawadogo, and Mounira Compoare scored for the visitors.

Samkelisiwe Fakudze and Tenanile Ngcamphalala converted for the host.

The biggest winners of the day were Ghana which picked a whopping 7-0 win away from home over Rwanda.
