Al Ahly beat Japanese side, Urawa Red Diamonds 4-2 to win the bronze medal match of the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia on Friday.

The Egyptian side sully got their noses in front when following a short corner routine, Mohamed Hany’s vicious strike from distance was too hot to handle for the Japanese goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa, allowing Yasser Ibrahim to convert the rebound from the goal line.

Al Ahly which featured in the last three FIFA Club World Cup third place playoffs doubled their advantage in the 25th minute.

Kamikaze defending for Urawa saw Alexander Scholz pass to Atsuki Ito under significant pressure from Ahmed Nabil Koka, who dispossessed the left-back and found Percy Tau who finished with an aplomb.

Urawa pulled a goal back before halftime as Jose Kante volleyed home from inside the area.

After a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, referee Tori Penso pointed to the spot after Linssen’s header had hit Hany’s arm, and Scholz tucked home the resulting penalty in the 54th minute.

On the hour mark, Hiroki Sakai’s header out could only find Ali Maaloul, whose shot took a deflection off Yoshio Koizumi to flummox Nikishawa and restore Al Ahly’s lead.

Al Ahly withstood Urawa Red Diamonds’ late pressure and added their fourth late on through a curling Maaloul’a free kick to win the bronze medal for the Egyptians.
