Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC have confirmed the appointment of Jess Thorup as their new head coach on a two-and-a-half-year deal reportedly worth around USD 8.5 million.
The 55-year-old Dane, who succeeds the outgoing technical team, will earn USD 3.2 million annually, making it one of the most lucrative coaching contracts ever involving a Danish manager.
Thorup brings a wealth of experience from European football, having previously managed FC Midtjylland, KAA Gent, KRC Genk, FC Copenhagen, and most recently FC Augsburg in the German Bundesliga.
His appointment comes as Al Ahly aim to strengthen their dominance both domestically and in continental competitions, including the CAF Champions League, where the Cairo club remain the record holders.
“It’s an honour to join a club with such a massive history and passionate supporters. I’m here to build on success and push Al Ahly to even greater heights,” Thorup said in a brief club statement.
Background
- Thorup guided FC Midtjylland to the Danish Superliga title in 2015.
- He led KAA Gent to Champions League qualification and enjoyed success developing young talents in Denmark and Belgium.
- Al Ahly recently completed another dominant campaign, adding to their record 12 CAF Champions League titles and reaffirming their status as Africa’s most decorated club.
What Jess Thorup’s Appointment Means for Al Ahly
For Al Ahly, the arrival of Jess Thorup represents a strategic shift toward European-style coaching continuity. The Danish tactician is known for his structured pressing systems, flexible attacking play, and commitment to nurturing younger players—qualities that could modernise the Red Devils’ approach both in Egypt and across Africa.
Thorup’s track record for building cohesive, disciplined teams at FC Midtjylland and Copenhagen suggests Al Ahly’s hierarchy are seeking more than just results—they want a sustainable football identity rooted in modern tactical principles.
The financial scale of the deal also signals intent: Al Ahly are determined to remain Africa’s benchmark club, keeping pace not only with rivals like Zamalek, Wydad Casablanca, and Mamelodi Sundowns, but also with leading sides on the global stage.
In essence, this is a statement of ambition—a move designed to blend Al Ahly’s legendary winning culture with the tactical sophistication of Europe’s elite.
