Rigobert Song Bahanag has named midfield sensation, Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa as his team captain for their 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Namibia, this Friday March 24, according to Cfoot.
The Napoli midfielder had been tipped one of the possible favorites to captain the team in the absence of Vincent Aboubakar.
Anguissa, 27, who remains one of the best midfielders the National team boast today, has won 46 caps for Cameroon since he earned a call up in 2017. He has scored five goals for country.
He has equally greatly contributed to Napoli’s progress this season in the Italian Serie A and other competitions for the club, where he is a regular starter.
Song’s choice only means veteran defender, Nicolas Nkoulou who is the oldest in the team as at now will start as a substitute.
The 32-year-old defender and former team captain of the Indomitable Lions after five years of absence, skippered Cameroon during one of the World Cup group stage game that saw Aboubakar start on the bench.
However, Aboubakar and vice captain, Eric Maxim Choupo Moting will miss the game due to suspension and injury respectively, causing the coach to make a choice between the oldest and a prolific player in the team today.
It is evident Nkoulou will have to give way for Christopher Wooh or Flavien Enzo Boyomo to begin securing the central defense line.
Cameroon host Namibia at the historic Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium, a game scheduled for 8:30pm GMT.
