Nigeria forward, Umar Sadiq who was replaced by the Nigeria’s senior men’s national team upon arrival in Cote d’Ivoire due to injury _has been named in Real Sociedad matchday squad for their next game against Osasuna on Wednesday.
Sadiq was asked to retunr to his club after Super Eagles second training session in Abidjan by the team doctor on the account of being injured and was replaced by Trabzonspor forward, Paul Onuachu.
He was said to have gotten a knock during the team’s 2-0 loss to Guinea in a friendly match in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirate (UAE).
The former Almeria forward returned to Spain few days ago for recovery. He had an individual training on Monday and trained with the team on Tuesday.
He has now been named among the Spanish side’s 22 man squad that will face Osasuna away from home in the Round of 16 of the Copa Del Rey on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Tuesday dismissed allegations of negligence and unprofessional conduct on the part of the Super Eagles medical team concerning the withdrawal of Spain-based forward Sadiq Umar from the squad for the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.
But there have been insinuation of foul play, unprofessional conduct or probably favouritism in the social media regarding his withdrawal.
Defending Sadiq’s withdrawal, the NFF, in the statement addressed the reports circulating on social media and clarified the events leading to Umar’s withdrawal from the squad.
According to the statement, “Umar was fit upon his arrival at the camp and underwent the standard pre-competition medical assessment, where he was deemed in good health. The injury occurred during a friendly match against Guinea on January 8, resulting in swelling in the back of his left knee.”
Sadiq was reported to have suffered a knee injury when the Super Eagles played Guinea in a pre-AFCON warm-up match in Abu Dhabi.
Sadiq was subsequently replaced by Trabzonspor’s forward, Paul Onuachu.
