Women’s football enthusiast, Moses Bako Nagogo has predicted a tough Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship for the 2023 season.
12 teams will converge in Ogun State from July 7 to 14 for the second NWFL Championship.
The top two teams at the end of the league would gain promotion to top flight NWFL Premiership which Bako opined will be a hard one to predict the two teams that would gain promotion.
“This season’s NWFL Championship will be a tough one because we saw most of the teams play in the NWFL Nationwide and various competitions. We already know some of the teams in the league before now like Sunshine Queens and Pelican Stars. We know their strength against the other teams,” Bako told www.kick442.com.
“In the Federation Cup, we saw how some of them performed well against big sides. It is easier for an elephant to pass through the eye of the needle than fo any of those teams to qualify for the NWFL Premiership. It’s going to be a hard task for everyone.
“This showed the growing nature of the league. The league is improving. For years now, we have seen tremendous improvement.
“The former league board created this three tiers while rebranding the league that is now more competitive. When you are even playing in the Championship, it’s a plus. You don’t look at it as if you are not playing professional football.
“We pray that in the future when we have a new board, we would be able to have Championship sides playing the normal league ad not coming to a centre to play. We should look forward to see them play a league format like the normal home and away. Eve if it’s a zonal or regional format.
“After this, then the league can have a Super Four for the top teams that will lead to promotion to the Premiership.”
Last season, Ibom Angels and Heartland Queens gained promotion at the end of the 2022 NWFL Championship in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
Two teams will move up to the top tier of he women’s football league in Nigeria at the end of this season from Ikenne and Sagamu centre.
