The president of Rugby Africa, Herbert Mensah has applauded the kingdom of Morocco for tremendous investments made in sports to groom and nurture home talents.
Mensah was speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Gateway Africa forum where he was quizzed on the business of sports in Africa.
An astute sports administrator who has spent over three decades managing football and rugby institutions, Mensah who was recently voted at the helm of Africa’s rugby governing body, has emphasized on the need for governments and international sports bodies to invest more in Africa.
The Ghanaian has pinpointed Morocco’s success at the 2022 Fifa World Cup as a glaring example of the spinoffs accrued from proper investment in sports.
“Morocco certainly set the world on fire for people to understand that there are early players whose qualities are born out of where they come from as opposed to elsewhere” Mensah stated.
“If you have that investment, you can look at football, you look at Hakimi, you look at the goalkeeper Bonu and the rest, we have the same in rugby”

The rugby Africa president intimated that talent development with the case of Morocco was eased by proper investment in infrastructure and training.
He however recognized that the talent drain that Africa is witnessing is down to a quest for better training and financial opportunities overseas.
“At the end of the day, it’s all about money.” Mensah stated before adding, ” The money that’s invested means players their families and people have a choice as to how they see the next 10,20 or 30 years of their life, especially in sports where you have a shorter life span.”
“We need to get the global bodies to invest more” the Rugby Africa president hinted.
On March 18, 2023, Hebert Mensah was voted president of Rugby Africa with a promise to revolutionize the sport on the continent and attract significant investment to grow the game.
Morocco in the past years has come under the spotlight not just for its sporting prowess but for the quality of world class infrastructure the kingdom is endowed with.
Moroccan sports officials have assured the country is on a resolute quest to become a Sporting Eldorado on the globe in a few years.
