Arthur Bennen’s gets first Coton goal as holders return to winning ways

Cotonsport of Garoua returned to winning ways this Tuesday courtesy of an early strike from Arthur Bennen whose goal was the first for the current Elite 1 champions.

Coach Gabriel Haman’s team recorded a narrow one-nil win over gritty Djiko in a delayed match day 16 fixture, thus earning a first win in eight games this year and inflicting a first defeat in the Mauril Njoya era in charge of the Bandjoun outfit.

Former New Stars and Rayon Sports forward Bennen made the most of a rare start as he scored eight minutes into the contest to put Coton ahead for the first time this year.

Bannen received a well-weighted ball from Kamilou Daouda dribbled past two before firing it into the roof of Kevin Junior Deno.

The early advantage gave Goni Ali and his mates the right comfort to settle and dominate the game in front of the few home fans in attendance.

Both sides came close to getting the second goal of the game but the chances were wasted or dealt with.

Coton could have doubled their advantage earlier in the second segment when Kamilou received a square ball on the edge of the box with time and space but Deno narrowed the angle, to force the veteran to shoot directly into his path.

Eric Arthur Cantona who was considered the Djiko to-go man going into the contest was cocked all afternoon by Che Malone in defence for the 17-time champions.

Though there were changes in personnel from both sides deep into the second segment, chances were few and far between.

The game finished 1-0 in favor of Cotonsport, thus ended their seven-game winless run and earned a first victory since they beat PWD of Bamenda 2-1 on December 28.

The victory takes Cotonsport up to the third spot on the log with 23 points with two games in hand, going into their clash against Canon in battle for the title playoff spots on Sunday in Yaounde.
