Belgian coach Hugo Broos has confirmed that he will not continue as head coach of South Africa’s senior men’s national team, bringing an end to a successful five-year spell in charge of Bafana Bafana.
Speaking about his future, the 74-year-old insisted his decision to step away from coaching is final, although he remains open to serving South African football in a different role.
“Will I continue as a coach after all? No, it is irreversible! If they need me for something else, perhaps in scouting: that is something else. But football is no longer going to be a part of my life 24 hours a day,” Broos told Voetbalnieuws.
Appointed in 2021, Broos oversaw a remarkable turnaround for South Africa after years of inconsistency on the continental stage. Under his leadership, Bafana Bafana qualified for two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the nation’s return to football’s biggest stage.
One of the highlights of his tenure came at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where South Africa exceeded expectations to finish third after defeating DR Congo in the bronze medal match. He also guided the team to the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, further cementing his legacy.
Broos, who famously led Cameroon to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations title, leaves South Africa after restoring belief in the national team and laying a solid foundation for the future.
While his coaching career appears to be over, Broos has indicated he would consider remaining involved in football in an advisory or scouting capacity if called upon.
