- The 2025 cup of Cameroon Round of 16 delivered a harsh reality check for several big names
- Relegated powerhouses Union Sportive and Astres of Douala exited the competition empty-handed, compounding their miserable seasons without a single trophy
- Adding to the drama, Cotonsport, despite a hefty budget, once again fell short, highlighting a persistent struggle to convert investment into on-field success as other teams like PWD Bamenda dominated their way through
The dust has settled on the Round of 16 in the 2025 cup of Cameroon , and for some, it’s a bitter end to a forgettable campaign.
Most notably, two traditional powerhouses, Union Sportive and Astres of Douala, find themselves staring at an empty trophy cabinet, a particularly painful reality as both clubs have been relegated from the top flight this season.
Their Cup exits, with Astres suffering a resounding 0-3 defeat to Fauve Azur, confirm a season of abject failure, leaving their loyal supporters with nothing to cheer about.
Another club facing uncomfortable questions is Cotonsport. For the second consecutive season, the Garoua giants will fail to reach the podium in either domestic competition, a truly perplexing outcome given their ambitious budget of 750 million XAF at the season’s outset. Their 1-0 defeat to Aigle Menoua, sealed by Creol Ymele’s strike at the Bertoua Municipal Stadium, highlights a systemic issue that extends beyond mere bad luck.
The investment clearly isn’t translating into on-field success, and the club’s hierarchy will surely be feeling the pressure.
Beyond these narratives of disappointment, the Round of 16 delivered its usual dose of drama and standout performances. PWD Bamenda put on a scoring masterclass, dismantling AS Fortuna with a comprehensive 6-2 victory, largely thanks to a scintillating hat-trick from Ali Nsangou, who now boasts five goals in the competition.
Aigle Mungo also booked their spot in the quarter-finals with a narrow but hard-fought 1-0 win over Bafmeng United, with Yves Mbappe finding the back of the net in the 29th minute at the Melong Municipal Stadium. Elsewhere, Union sportive d’Abong Mbanga delivered a dominant 5-2 performance against NSO United, while defending champions Colombe put on a clinical display, dispatching FC Yaounde II with a commanding 4-0 scoreline.
Racing edged past Olympique de Dibombari 2-1, and Pantherre secured a 2-1 victory over Dynamo. These results, alongside wins for Atlantic SA, Apejes, Mintack De Septentrion, Royal FC de Nka’a, Chamba SA, Canon, and Gazelle FA, set the stage for an intriguing eight-final round as the chase for Cup glory intensifies.
Bamboutos and Rizière de Noun couldn’t be separated after 120 minutes, with Rizière de Noun eventually triumphing 5-4 in a tense penalty shootout.
